Malgré sa victoire (4-2) sur le Costa-Rica, l’Allemagne ne verra pas les huitièmes de finale, éliminée à cause d’une différence de but inférieure à l’Espagne qui termine deuxième. Le Japon a fini en premier dans le groupe.
Décidément, ce mondial 2022 nous réserve d’énormes surprises avec une dernière journée de groupe riche en rebondissement. Les Allemands se sont débattus comme de beaux diables face à des Costaricains insoumis, mais ne sont pas parvenus à se qualifier malgré leur victoire.
Serge Gnabry auteur d’un bon match, a ouvert le score dès la 10e minute de quoi donner plus d’espoir à la Mannschaft qui n’était pas maître de son destin. Pour se qualifier, l’Allemagne devait gagner, conjugué tout en espérant au moins un nul de l’Espagne.
En seconde période, les attaques répétées des hommes de Hansi Flick ont laissé de l’espace aux joueurs costariciens, qui ont carrément renversé le score entre la 58e et la 70e minute par des buts de Tejeda et de Vargas, un score… Qui les qualifiait ! Oui, car de l’autre côté le Japon menait déjà 2-1 face à l’Espagne !
Un scénario fou car à ce moment les deux qualifiés du groupe étaient le Costa-Rica, avec 6 points et le Japon avec 5 points. Mais cette folie n’aura duré que trois minutes puisque le jeune attaquant allemand, Kaï Havertz, auteur d’un doublé, allait rétablir le score nul à la 73e minute avant de redonner l’avantage à son équupe à la 85e.
À mesure que les minutes passaient, l’Espagne était incapable de trouver l’égalisation face aux Nippons, on a donc filé tout droit vers l’élimination au premier tour des champions du monde de 2014, comme en 2018. Le dernier but de Füllkrug portant le score à (4-2) n’aura été que peu utile.
Donc, à la surprise générale le Japon termine premier du groupe E avec 6 points, suivi de l’Espagne, 4 points avec une différence de but +6, 4 points pour l’Allemagne, différence +1, le Costa-Rica bon dernier avec 3 points.
