FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Revolution received goals from Diego Fagundez and Lee Nguyen in the second half of their first home game since the Boston Marathon Bombings to beat the Philadelphia Union 2-0 on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium.
The win came after several winless performances from the Revs and it was also their first ever win over the Philadelphia Union.
Playing without A.J. Soares who was nursing a strained hamstring, Coach Jay Heaps inserted Stephen McCarthy in the starting line up and paired him with Jose Goncalves to bolster the defense.
Fagundez got the scoring started in the 61st minute, Diego scored on a beautiful pass from Nguyen that went to the right side of the box, and the ball found Fagundez who put it past MacMath, the Union’s Goalkeeper.
The Revs needed only 10 more minutes for their second goal of the night as Nguyen increased the Revolution’s lead to 2-0 in the 71st minute. Saer Sene Received a ball from Nguyen into the box, Saer’s shot resulted in a save by MacMath but Nguyen was at the right place and finished it for his first goal of the season.
Shuttleworth made several big saves but the crucial one might have came in the 84th minute when he dove to tip Jack McInerney’s shot around the post to keep his second clean sheet of the season and also, the club’s fourth in seven games this season.
The New England Revolution will head back in the road to face the Portland Timbers on Thursday night.
