Mexico will play the Portuguese national team in a friendly match at Gillette Stadium on June 6, three days after meeting Bosnia-Herzegovina at Chicago’s Soldier Field, in preparation for the the World Cup which will begin on June 12 in Sao Paolo, Brazil .
Mexico, who needed a last minute effort to get into the game’s biggest competition, are slotted Group A with hosts Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon.
Cristiano RonaldoPortugal will be coming to the Boston area for the second time in less than a year after being defeated by a 3-1 margin by Neymar and the Brazilian national team at Gillette Stadium last September. Portugal, who will also play Ireland four days later before embarking to Brazil, are drawn to group G where they will face Germany on June 16, faces the United States six days later and ends the group stage against Ghana on June 26.
“With both of these teams leaving directly for Brazil after this series of matches, we’re very excited to be able to present this unique opportunity to fans of this region,” New England Revolution president Brian Bilello said on Friday in a statement, “the chance to see two World Cup-bound squads – and some of the world’s top players – means this will be a truly memorable event for everyone in attendance.”
Both teams are expected to feature their top squads, including Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the most recent FIFA Ballon d’Or winner.
