After a lackluster performance against at home last week against Valencia, Gerardo Martino’s side wasted no time getting back into the win column. With a pair a of strikes from Leo Messi, a botched header from Alexis Sanchez, and a late close-range shot from Cesc Fabregas, the visiting FC Barcelona cruised past Sevilla 4-1 on a rain-soaked Sunday night. Alberto Moreno notched the lone goal for the hosting side. The win moved Barcelona to the top of the table with 57 points apiece with Real and Atletico Madrid, who played on Saturday.
As Cristiano Ronaldo was serving the first of his three game suspension after being red-carded against Athletic Bilbao last week, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema propelled Real Madrid to a 4-2 victory over Villarreal on Saturday. Bale provided a goal and an assist which sets up Karim Benzema, who netted two goals in the win. Jesse Rodriguez added the other goal for Real as defender Mario Gaspar and midfielder Giovani Dos Santos added two beautiful strikes for the fifth-place Villarreal.
Also on Saturday, midfielder Verza handed relegation-threatened Almeria a shocking 2-0 victory over the visiting Atletico Madrid with pair of late goals. It was Atletico’s second consecutive defeat following the 0-3 ldefeat in a derby against Real Madrid for a Copa del Rey Semi-final earlier this week. Diego Simeone’s squad didn’t have three key players as keeper Thibaut Courtois, defender Luis Felipe and striker David Villa were all nursing injuries.
Elsewhere, Levante held Real Sociedad on a scoreless draw at home on Saturday. With a 2-0 victory over Getafe, Osasuna claimed three much-needed points as Javi Gracia’s side is trying to stay away from regulation zone.
Real Valladolid received a pair of late goals from Colombian Striker Humberto Osorio to draw Elche 2-2, the comeback effort earned the home side a crucial point.
Valencia defeated Real Betis in a 5-0 comprehensive victory at home on Saturday, while Rayo Vallecano handled Malaga with a 4-1 victory, the win provided Rayo a much-needed chance to close the gap with the other teams above them.
