Foxborough, Mass – After a quick draw on the road against the Timbers last week, the New England Revolution came home hosting Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium.
Real Salt Lake was coming from a 2-0 victory over Vancouver to conclude a three-game homestand. After a sluggish start, Real gained a slight edge in the as they enjoyed a 58% ball possession in the first half.
The Revs’ best chance in the first half came Jerry Bengston found a ball in the left side from Lee Nguyen early in the contest only to see his right footed blocked by the visitors.
The first half ended on a scoreless draw as both teams were unable to take the advantage.
To begin the second half, the NE Revolution wasted no time out of the gate as they received a pair of opportunities from Diego Fagundez and Lee Nguyen. Diego took a ball from Lee on the outside of the box but Goalkeeper Nick Rimando was right on target for his first major work of the night.
The Revs kept attacking the visitors and they would add the first goal of the night in the 51st minute of the match when Ryan Guy found a ball from the bottom of the right corner and scored an amazing goal. Kelyn Rowe was credited with the assist on that goal.
From that moment it looked like the Revs were on pace to win their 2nd home game of the season in as many week. But no lead is safe in the MLS as the Revs’ coach, Jay Heaps put it after the game.
Heaps inserted Saer Sene in the 65th minute for Diego Fagundez who had a quiet game compared to the 2 games he played in the previous week. Coach Jason Kreis added some much-needed firepower for Real Salt Lake when he replaced Joao Plata with Olmes Garcia who would eventually add the decisive goal of the match.
Real Salt Lake added its first goal of the night in the 77th minute when Devon Sandoval hit a right footed shot from closed proximity of the goal guarded by Bobby Suttleworth. The Revs were hoping Bobby would keep a clean sheet for the third straight game but that hope vanished with Sandoval’s equalizer.
The visitors took the lead twelve minutes later when newcomer Olmes Garcia added a right footed shot following a corner kick.
The Revs had a chance to tie things up in added time when Kelyn Rowe draw a penalty kick moment after the second goal from the visitors. Saer Sene, the club’s leading goalscorer last year, elected to kick the penalty. Sene’s left side kick was saved by the keeper Nick Rimando who came up huge for the visitors preserving the 2-1 advantage.
Up next, the Revolution will be right back at it when they host the New York Red Bulls at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night while Real Lake will be on the road to face Montreal Impact in Canada.
