After a disappointed loss to Real Salt Lake, New England Revolution returned to action on Saturday night with their I95 rival New York Red Bulls on hand at Gillette Stadium for the first time this season. The two teams faced off recently in New York where the Red Bulls claimed a 4-1 victory over the Revolution.
The Red Bulls were without Star Thierry Henry who has yet to play in New England ever since he came to the league in 2010.
Diego Fagundez who played one of his best game of the season, scored the first goal of the night on a close range right footed shot in the 54th minute. The Red Bulls responded very quickly, Sam Lloyd tied things up on a shot from the right side of the bottom left corner one minute later.
“We didn’t have any time to regroup. It was a momentary loss of concentration and, boom, they score. That kills us.” Said New England Coach Jay Heaps after the game . “Disappointing to give up the goal the way we did, right after we scored,”
Fagundez came very close to give New England the lead and a potential game winning goal in the 80th minute but Luis Robles, the Red Bulls goalkeeper came up with a monumental save.
The tie extends the Revolution’s home unbeaten streak against the Red Bulls at 17 games. The Revs are 11-0-6 during that span.
“But we haven’t won here in 11 years, we didn’t lose, so a point in the road is very important and it’s really what, at the end of the day, sometimes you hope for.” Head coach Mike Petke of the Red Bulls told reporters after the game.
The two teams will play again for third and final time in the regular season on Oct 5th in Red Bull Arena.
Up next, the New England Revolution will be travelling to Houston to face the Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.
