Barrett, who snubbed into the match in the 79th minute, tapped in the game winning shot in added time following a missed attempt by Clint Dempsey, who came in the second half as well for the hosting Sounders.
Sporting KC goalkeeper Eric Eric Kronberg, who replaces longtime Sporting keeper Jimmy Nielsen, was having a solid evening between the sticks up until Barrett caught him out of position.
On the other end, goalkeeper Stefan Frei was also making his first debut for the Sounders as the club’s number one option between the sticks. Although less challenged than the opposing keeper, he made 3 saves for the hosts on a rainy evening.
Haitian international defender Jerome Mechack, who played for Haiti earlier on Wednesday against Kosovo, came into the match in the 92th minute to replace Josh Gardner for the visiting Sporting KC.
Sporting KC return to action on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League hosting Cruz Azul of the Mexican league, while Seattle will stay home to host Toronto FC in Toronto’s first regular-season action on March 15.
