MLS Soccer: NE Revolution held scoreless by DC United

Riding a three game winning streak, the New England Revolution hosted DC United on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium to  cap a three- game homestand.  With wins over Houston Dynamo and LA Galaxy during the home-stretch, the Revs were unable to add one more win against the lowly United to conclude the  homestand with the last game finishing on a scoreless draw.

DC only had one shot on goal and it came in the 29th minute courtesy of Chris Pontius whose shot resulted in a save by Bobby Shuttleworth. Chris DeLeon also provided a scoring opportunity for the visitors early in the contest but his shot went wide left.

New England had few chances throughout the game notably late in the the contest with Lee Nguyen and Kelyn Rowe who came in the  second half for Saer Sene. Rowe and Nguyen were denied by D.C. goalkeeper Bill  Hamid. Fagundez took a long range shot midway through the second half but his attempt went over the crossbar.

With the draw against the United, the Revs (5-4-3) are now unbeaten in their last five outings, and lost only once in their last eight. In their turn, DC was shutout for the third straight time, and their 8th of the season.

The Draw extends New England’s league leading  clean sheet to nine, it also brings an end to Diego Fagundez’  hot scoring streak. Fagundez has scored one goal in each of the previous four games.

Up next, New England will face rival New York Red Bulls in a  fourth-round  US Open Cup match  at Harvard University’s Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium on Wednesday June 12, then they will return to MLS action next weekend when they visit the Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada. DC will be hosting  forth-round US Cup open as well, on the same day as New England, they will face the Philadelphia Union in their match.
