FOXBOROUGH, Mass. –The New England Revolution hosted LA Galaxy, the Defending champs of the MLS Cup on Sunday at Gillette Stadium for the first time since 2011. LA Galaxy dominated the Revs throughout the game; however, the local team was more opportunistic and found the net five times in the afternoon.
The visitors established their game right out of the gate despite the difficulties they had getting to the Stadium. Gyary Zardes and Juninho worked quickly to put Revs goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth to work. Bobby was up for the task as he registered his sixth shutout of the season.
London Donovan wasted a pair of chances that could have given LA the edge early in the first half. The Revs defenders also did a great job on preventing him from getting into his normal groove.
Saer Sene opened the gigantic scoring affair for the Revs halfway past the first half on a ball from fan-favorite Diego Fagundez. Sene scored his first goal of the season on his first start after his ACL tear last August. The goal was the lone score in the first half.
Lee Nguyen added another goal for the Revs midway through the second half when his blast from the center of the box went past GK Carlo Cudicini.
Diego Fagundez, Kelyn Rowe and Chad Barrett added goals late in the contest to give the Revolution their biggest victory of the season.
At this point of the season, New England’s defense is ranked the number one defense in the league, and they have not allowed a goal since May 11. We just made enough plays when it came down to it,” Said defender Chris Tierney. “We obviously found our feet a little in the second half and the guys up top did a great job and we kept another clean sheet in the back, which is always a priority.”
After the game, Saer Sene told Haititempo that physically he feels great, and ready to contribute to the success of the team.
LA Galaxy was without three regulars who accounted for half of their goals during the 2013 campaign. Robbie Keane (Ireland) and Omar Gonzalez (USA) were unavailable due to their international duties.
With the win, New England is now enjoying a three game winning streak and improves to 5-4-4(19 points) while LA drops to 6-5-2 (20 points). The Revs will stay at home next weekend to host DC United; meanwhile, LA will visit Real Salt Lake in Utah on June 8.
