With a 2-1 home win over the visiting New York Red Bulls on Saturday at Gillette Stadium in front of 18,296 fans, the New England Revolution extended their undefeated run to seven games to remain at the top of the Eastern Conference. New England also handed New York its first loss of the regular season following a seven-game undefeated streak.
Charlie Davies and Teal Bunbury helped steer the New England Revolution to well-deserved victory against Eastern Conference archrival New York Red Bulls with each player scoring a goal in either half.
The New York Red Bulls swept the Revolution during their two regular season meeting last year; however, New England returned the favor by eliminating the Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference championship to advance to the 2014 MLS Cup.
New England native Charlie Davies puts the Revolution ahead on a header following a cross from London Woodbury in the 9th minute of the contest. The goal was Davies’ third goal of the season while Woodbury collected his first MLS career assist in the process.
The home side doubled their lead in the second half when Teal Bunbury fantastically collected a ball following a nice build-up play from Lee Nguyen, Juan Agudello and Scott Caldwell in the 60th minute.
New York with responded in the 71st minute with a goal from Sacha Klejstan to cut the Revs lead in half.
The scoreline would remain 2-1 in favor of New England as both sides were unable to capitalized on their chances during the rest of the match.
Earlier during the day, New England announced the signing of Haitian U20 midfielder Zachary Herivaux to a professional contract. Herivaux, who is a product of the club’s academy, became the third homegrown player to be promoted joining fellow midfielders Scott Caldwell and Diego Fagundez. Per club and league policy, details of the contract were not disclosed.
Up next, the New England Revolution will be on the road to play their first ever match against expansion-side Orlando City. Meanwhile, the New York Red Bulls will head back home to host the other expansion club New York City FC on Sunday, May 10.
