The New England Revolution maintained their impressive form of late, comfortably securing 3 points at home, after a 4-0 drubbing of Real Salt Lake on Saturday night at Gillette Stadium with over 17 thousand fans on hand.
Despite being the most threatening side in the very early stages of the game, and an outstanding performance by GK Attinella; the lack of finishing and creation of chances from the midfield proved very costly for Real Salt Lake.
Six minutes before the half, Chris Tierney opened the floodgates for the Revs, finishing an attack from the hosts with a beautiful right footed curling shot from the top of the box. Juan Agudelo would add a second for New England just before halftime, tapping the ball home in an empty net, picking up a rebound from a Charlie Davis shot that Attinella had stopped initially.
Coming out of the half down 2 goals, Real Salt Lake never really looked threatening at any point in the second half. Less than five minute into it, Charlie Davies would head in New England’s third goal of the night, from a Scott Caldwell cross.
New England created a multitude of chances, and if not for the heroics of Attinella, the score would have been much worse for Real Salt Lake. Following a scramble in the 6 yards box and 2 diving saves by the keeper, Scott Caldwell blasted a poorly cleared ball from the box into the net and the frustration of the Salt Lake keeper was clearly visible.
With this win, the Revs have now extended their unbeaten streak to 6 games, and are looking more like the squad that made it to the MLS Cup last season. They temporarily move atop the Eastern Conference table, pending results of the Red Bulls at Colorado and DC United receiving Vancouver matches. They will remain at home to take on the Red Bulls next week. Meanwhile, Real Salt Lake will head back home to host the Earthquakes.
