The Montreal Impact defeated the undermanned New England Revolution 4-2 on Sunday night after a hard fought battle at on Sunday night Gillette Stadium.
New England Goalkeeper Matt Reis fouled Marco Di Vaio around the penalty area in the fifth minute from the opening whistle and that would lead to his ejection from the match. New England head coach Jay Heaps took out forward Chad Barrett in order to insert backup Goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth in the lineup. Referee Sorin Stoica awared a penalty to the Impact which was converted by midfielder Patrice Bernier to put the visitors ahead.
“I had no interaction with the referee at all. I felt that there was no explanation and it was disappointing … that’s what I think was the most disappointing, just the overall demeanor toward us. That’s what I feel upsets us the most,” coach Jay Heaps said on Matt Ries being red carded.
Diego Fagundez – the revs leading scorer – added another goal to his tally in the 26th minute of the match. Diego tapped in a ball which was deflected by Impact defender Jeb Brovsky level the score for the hosts.
Minutes later, referee Sorin Stoica awarded a second penalty to the visitors after the New England captain Jose Goncalves cleared a ball from Felipe Martins near the top of the box. Patrice Bernier would eventually scored again to give the visitors the lead on a penalty that was heavily contested.
“You can see that Felipe (Martins) was flying everywhere on the field when someone touched him. The referee should be aware of that and I think he didn’t consider this as a trait for the game and he gave the penalty straight away the second time and I was very surprised,” added the captain after the match
Top golden boot candidate Di Vaio increased the lead to 3-1 for the Impact when he took a pass from Hassoun Camara and quickly put it in the near post of the cage guarded by Shuttleworth right before the halftime mark.
The same combination would work together one more time to punish the Revs for a fourth goal after the half; Marco Di Vaio added his second goal of the match to give the visitors a comfortable lead. The goal was his 17th for the season.
Credit must go to the undermanned Revolution as they added their second goal in the 76th minute to reduce the deficit to two goals. Kelyn Rowe scored on a brilliant individual for his third goal in as many matches.
The two teams will meet again on October 12, in Montreal for the last time for the regular season.
