The New England Revolution put on a clinic on Sunday evening at Gillette stadium, trashing the visiting Seattle Sounders 5-0. In a game that pitted the top teams in both the Eastern and Western conference, the 11,000 fans in attendance were treated to an offensive show from the local-side. The Revs where very aggressive and took control of the game fourteen minutes into the contest after a few early looks on goal by the visitors.
Rookie Patrick Mullins got his second career goal in as many weeks, pouncing on a rebound in the 14th minute to get it started. After the match, Mullins praised the home crowd and the team’s confidence in his remarks to the press.
“Obviously having the fan support here is huge for us. We’ve played well here all season long, and coming into today we were confident,” said Mullins. “We’ve been on a good run of form, and we just wanted to make sure we took our style of play to them. We respect them as a team, obviously, with any team we play but we know we want to go out and play our style,” added the New Orleans native.
Last year’s sensation Diego Fagundez, who had been goalless this season, netted two sublime goals in a 12 minute span in the first half to end a 941-minute, regular-season goal-scoring drought. Teal Bunbury, who was very active from the beginning to the end, added a goal in the 36th minute and forced an own goal from Chad Marshall, to begin the second half.
With the win, New England improved to 4-3-2 all-time against Seattle Sounders FC, and increased its unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1), which includes three straight wins.
Up next, the Revs will head to PPL Park next Saturday to face the Philadelphia Union, while Seattle will return home to host the San Jose Earthquakes the same day.
