The New York Red Bulls earned a 2-0 road win over the New England Revolution for their first victory at Gillette Stadium since 2002 on Sunday evening with over 23,000 in attendance. Eric Alexander netted the game-winner and teammate Peguy Luyindula added a second-half strike to seal the deal for the visitors.
Alexander scored the opening goal of the match in the 17th minute on a header following a free-kick from Lloyd Sam. Alexander converted on an empty net as New England’s goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth was out of position on the play.
Midway through the second half, Luyindula hits a half-volley from just outside the penalty spot past Shuttleworth to increase the visitors’ advantage to two goals.
Despite several attempts from the Revs to respond to any of the goals from the Red Bulls, they were denied each time as New York’s goalkeeper Luis Robles made nine saves to preserve the shutout.
After winning five straight matches, the Revs have dropped the past two on a pair of 0-2 losses to two Eastern Conference rivals. Sunday’s loss was the club’s first at Gillette Stadium this season. They are now 4-1-1 at home so far this campaign.
Following the match, New England Revolution’s head coach admitted that his team needs improvement shooting the ball to the opposing net.
“I don’t think it was about effort or energy tonight. I think it was a little bit about the final ball, the class inside the area. We had two or three balls go across, we had shooting go right at their goal keeper. Look, we weren’t good enough and we’ve got to get better,” Said Heaps.
“We wanted to go out and finish our chances better tonight. Look, we could have scored in the first 30 seconds of that game; we could have scored at various times during the game. I just thought we let ourselves down.”
With the loss, the Revolution’s all-time record against the New York Red Bull dropped to 26-21-15.
Both clubs will be enjoying a two-week off from league actions as the league will be observing a World Cup break. New England will resume league action on June 28, when they welcome the Philadelphia Union at Gillette.
